It seems like we’re only just starting to get to the point where all new hardware has been shipping with USB 2.0 ports when all of a sudden news starts appearing that the long talked about USB 3.0 specification is finally going to appear.

IBM recently announced and demonstrated a USB 3.0 technology prototype. They’re saying that the new spec is expected to deliver roughly ten times the capacity of USB 2.0 … approximately 5Gbps or so. It’s also going to be backward compatible with USB 2.0 so that the USB 2.0 devices will work on a USB 3.0 port. I assume that USB 1.0 would also be included in that backwards compatibility but havent seen anything concrete confirming that yet.

From what I’ve read on Engadget, Ars Technica, Slashdot tech and other sources, I’d say that we can reasonably expect to see USB 3.0 ports and devices appearing sometime in late 2009 to early 2010.

Meanwhile, I’m sure somebody is already dreaming up USB 4.0 Can you say 5 terabytes a second?

Ok, so it’s a bit extreme. We can still dream can’t we?

According to a Site called Water Fuel Expert, you can indeed cut your fuel costs considerably by using a fuel system based on plain old ordinary water to either supplement or replace your gasoline use.

I know it sounds outrageous but that’s only if you think that he’s saying you can just pour water into the gas tank and drive on. Anybody that’s ever had fuel system troubles knows better than to put water in the gas tank. That’s why there’s a fortune to be made selling gas drier additives to remove water from gasoline fuel systems.

So how does it work?

It all goes back to basic junior high school chemistry. What is water made of? Well, the chemical symbol for water is H₂O, which means two parts Hydrogen and one part Oxygen.

You may also remember electrolysis, which is the process that allows the chemical components of water to be separated back into Hydrogen and Oxygen.

This invention uses that process to generate Hydrogen, a very combustible gas, and Oxygen which will accelerate that combustion. The two gases are combined to create a very powerful, clean and economic fuel.

Won’t Combining them just turn them back into water?

No, They don’t turn back into water until they’re burned. The result of burning Hydrogen and Oxygen is heat and water (usually in the form of vapor). This is why it’s so much cleaner. You don’t get smog or air pollution from burning Hydrogen.

What’s even better about using Hydrogen fuel is that it has the potential to eliminate our dependence on foreign oil in general and loosen the grip that the oil industry in general has on all of our wallets.

After being away for a month I’m back and There’s already an interesting idea to talk about. According to a piece on custompc.co.uk, a company called PNY is coming out with what *might* eventually be the latest thing in movies.

They’re selling the movie “Ghostbusters” on a 2 gb USB stick. At first, it sounds like a good idea, get a move on a usb stick, plug it into your pc and play it. The downside is that it includes a form of DRM (Digital Rights Management) that is supposed to make it impossible to play the movie unless the usb stick is plugged in to the computer. Not only does this make it pointless to copy the movie to the PC but there’s going to be people determined to crack that DRM and play movies without the USB key in place.

Reading the comments following the article it became clear that the thing is overpriced by a long way. It’s apparently selling for £30 (that’s approximately 53.22 U.S. dollars) for a 2 GB USB key with the movie on it. It would be far cheaper to buy a USB key for about 10 to 15 USD and download the movie for a few bucks and put it on the key yourself. Heck, If you get the movie from the right place you can end up with a legal paid for copy that doesn’t have any debilitating DRM nonsense on it.
