Gift buying for the geek / nerd / tech in the family can be something of an adventure. This part of your friends and family members are notoriously difficult to buy for because they’ve often strange tastes in just about everything. Here’s some thoughts that might give you some ideas for that hard to please geek.

T-Shirts

T-shirts have become a popular way to express opinions, identities and even humor. Humorous or “Geeky” statements like “No I won’t fix your computer” or “Code is poetry” are popular favorites, chemical formulas of caffeine or chocolate.

Electronics

It’s not always true that most tech minded people already own all the electronics they want. It’s almost inevitable that there’s some accessory, add on or what have you that they want, or more likely, need.

Gadgets

Interesting, preferably useful as well as entertaining gadgets are almost always welcome. And don’t just limit yourself to hardware gadgets. There’s plenty of useful and interesting software tools out there as well. The trick there is to make sure that you’re not getting them something that’s not compatible with what they have. Like buying a Windows version of a program when their computer uses a Linux OS.

Toys

Almost any of a an amazing variety of R/C (radio controled) toys are almsot always a big hit. In the last year or two, R/C Helicopters have become inexpensive and are capable of loads of fun… Especially if you get a couple of extra battery packs so while one is in use the other two can be charging.

For the Home or Office

Though others may not get the joke a large percentage of tech / geek types would get great satisfaction out of the (literally) endless humor of serving pie from a plate that has the mathematical value of PI printed around the edge. Douglas Adams fans will appreciate almost any type of artifact with the number 42 on it. One idea there would be to give a collection of (you guessed it) 42 such items. Other classic favorites include a binary clock, USB mug warmer, USB toaster, or any of a growing variety of ususual or entertaining USB gadgets and toys

Caffeine

Then again, if you can find it, few dedicated tech / hacker / geek types will be able to resist something like a case of Jolt cola or other high caffeine drinks, known for years as an essential ingredient to those all-night gaming or inspired program hacking sessions. (and for the record, I’m not talking about the illegal acts of evil-doers who are more properly called “crackers”)

Grocery shopping is one of those an endless chores we’ve all got to do however there’s ways to make it easier. Here’s some tips to saving money on groceries that will also make shopping shopping easier by using a shopping list.

Keep your shopping list on hand

Using a grocery shopping list is a great way to save money and time at the store. You can prevent extra runs to the store for things that you’ve run out of or forgotten. Keep a shopping list on the refrigerator or other convenient place. Then, when things run out, add them to the list. When getting ready for that trip to the grocery store, add the things on the shopping list to the main grocery shopping list. Include stuff you need for your week’s meal plan. Be sure to include paper products like toilet paper, paper towels and personal care items to list.

Divide and Conquer

Another great way to save time in store is to take one trip to the grocery store to write down whats in each aisle in order. Pay particular attention to the aisles with the most frequently used items. Use this list when writing up the shopping list. This way you only have to make one circuit of the store to get everything. This makes it fast and easy to go through the grocery store. The 5 minutes it takes to put the list in order can cut 30 minutes or more off of a shopping trip. It also cuts down on unplanned purchases. If you don’t need anything on the baking aisle, there’s no need to go down that aisle and face temptation.

Involve the whole family

It’s not easy for children that have been allowed to choose items at store to find out that they might not have what they want anymore. When you have to shop with children, start out by telling them that the family is now using a shopping list and only what’s on the list will be bought. Ask them if there’s something they’d like before going shopping and if it’s reasonable, have them write it on the list. This gets them involved in the process and teaches them the value of planning.

When at the store and the child asks for something different, remind them that unless a need comes up unexpected, things need to be asked for and put on the list ahead of time. Focus on the fact that they do get to have things, they just need to clear it with you and add it to the list before the shopping trip. Reinforce the idea that buying should be planned and not by impluse.

You can give children additional input by letting them choose other things such as breakfast cerals and such. Be sure that you demonstrate what you’re trying to teach them by by only buying things on the list.

Sites such as eBay, Amazon, Overstock.com can all be great places to find gifts that fit every member of your family. It’s true that auction sites take time to learn the ropes and how to tell a good deal from a bad one and how to tell what sellers to avoid no matter what the deals are they’re offering. The thing to do there is to start learning the ropes in early summer, that way by the time fall is approaching, you’ll have a decent idea of how t but if you have list of items and you know how much for each you’re willing to spend then you already know how much to bid.

Paying for the stuff you buy online items is easiest to do with Paypal or by credit card. It’s also possible to use an “e-check” through Paypal, which draws on your bank account, however using an e-check is slower than a regular Paypal payment that you make when there’s already money in your Paypal account because it takes an extra three days to a week to clear before your items will be shipped.

When at the checkout, always make sure that the url starts with “https”, this means that the transaction is encrypted to protect your personal information.

Online shopping is the answer to a lot of people’s busy schedules. Firefox 3 and some of it’s add-ons can make life easier or the online shopper. Here’s a few tips:

Bookmarking:

That sounds really obvious, right? If you’re anything like me, your bookmark colletion looks like a cluttered desk … totally disorganized and hard to find stuff.

Firefox 3 has introduced a new feature called “bookmark tags”. With this feature, not only can you bookmark all of your favorite shopping sites, you can also tag them with words such as “jewelry,” “home,” “clothes,” “dresses,” and “christmas” which makes them easier to find them again.

When you bookmark a page you have the option to add tags to that bookmark just the way you would put tags on a blog posting.

Once you’ve tagged a page, you can find all pages that have a given tag by typing the tag in the location bar. Firefox 3 will then show you all pages in your bookmarks that have that particular tag.

You can create a group of items that you’re interested in by bookmarking and tagging them with something like “wishlist.” Then, to find those pages again you just can type “wishlist” into the URL bar and a drop down menu appears with everything tagged “wishlist”.

The power of StumbleUpon:

There’s three basic ways StumbleUpon can be useful. First is the random stumble, Second is using their search option to stumble sites with specific tags. Third is you can use the “Send To” item on the StumbleUpon toolbar to send pages to people along with a short note without having to crack open an email program.

More Firefox Add-Ons:

There a lot of shopping add-ons that can be used to save time and or money. Here’s just two: (I haven’t used these myself but they appear useful just the same)

Interclue: Provides a sneak peek of pages linked from search results. Helpful when you’re doing a search for a product and don’t want to waste time loading every page that comes up in the search.

ReminderFox: Lets you set reminders. Useful for making sure you remember things you’re planning to buy for gifts & such.
